Mother’s Day: A time for mothers to unite during the time of war.

Did you know that American Mother’s Day was not originally created to acknowledge the greatness of moms?  It all began with Ann Reeves Jarvis, a Sunday school teacher.  She set up workshops, called Mother’s Day Work Clubs, to help teach mothers how to care for their children and to battle unsavory living conditions. During and after the Civil War she encouraged women to assist all families regardless of what side they were/had been on.

At the same time, Julia Ward Howe also participated in the early phase of Mother’s Day.  (She was the poet who wrote lyrics for the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a reformer, and an anti-war activist.) Being an anti-war advocate, she called on women to unite for world peace following the bloodbath of the American Civil War.  This was known as the “Mother’s Day Proclamation.”

Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, was inspired by the work her mother and Julia Ward Howe had done together. She is responsible for establishing the modern Mother’s Day to honor all mothers.  However, her great idea evolved past what she hoped it would be. When the holiday eventually went mainstream, Anna was disheartened. She did not approve of how commercialized the once-noble holiday had become.  And she spent her last days trying to dismantle the very holiday she worked so hard to create.

Consider all of the political conflicts erupting around the world today. A celebration of Mother’s Day is every bit as apropos as it was back in the late 1800s. It’s time to return to the original purpose and honor all mothers, no matter what side they are on.
